A coordinated wave of AI-powered voice-phishing attacks struck some of Wall Street’s most fortified hedge funds on August 5, 2026, deploying synthetic voice technology to deceive employees into surrendering system access — and activating FINRA’s newly built Financial Intelligence Fusion Center in its first real-world test as an industry defense mechanism.

Citadel, Point72 Asset Management, Two Sigma Investments, and Millennium Management were all targeted in the assault, along with several unnamed private equity firms, according to people familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity. The attackers used voice-cloning technology to replicate the voices, tones, and phrasing of trusted executives and colleagues in phone calls and audio messages, attempting to trick employees into handing over credentials or granting access to internal networks, as InvestmentNews first reported….

Brian Francetich, a shareholder and director at Golsan Scruggs RIA, described multiple cases in which advisors were “thoroughly convinced they were communicating with their client on a money movement request — and were in fact interacting with a cybercriminal.” The mechanism is consistent: attackers compromise a client or colleague contact, use it to gather intelligence about relationships and communication patterns, and then impersonate that person to reach whoever controls the money or systems….
